According to
historical records the first wildlife sanctuary
in the world was established in Sri Lanka in the
ancient times when a Buddhist monk reminded a
mighty Sinhalese king that the animals and birds
also have a right to live. Some of the important
wildlife sanctuaries located in different parts
of Sri Lanka are Minneriya Sanctuary, Wasgamuwa
National Park, Handapanagala, Udawalawe Park,
Yala National Park and the Bundala sanctuary.

in the country which include more than 250

plants with medicinal value. Scientists believe
that in forests like Singharaja, Knuckles and
Peak wilderness has plants yet undiscovered.
Sri Lanka has more
than 430 species of migratory and resident birds
with 26 endemics (27 with the new Owl). Most of
the migratory birds can be found in the dry zone
of the country in very large numbers while most
of the endemics are in the wet zone. Sri Lanka
consist a good network of National Parks,
sanctuaries, forest reserves forest monasteries,
home gardens and some plantations provide
excellent birding opportunities. Out of the 134

CULTURE
& HERITAGE TOURS |

|
Buddhism was introduced to Sri Lanka in the 3rd
century B.C. when Emperor Asoka of India sent
his son, Mahinda, to the island and introduced
Buddhism to the king. Sri Lankan kings became
powerful patrons of Buddhism and it became an
integral part of Sinhalese culture and
civilization and also had a great effect on the
literary development of the island. Today,
Buddhism continues to play a central role in the
lives of the majority of Sri Lankans. This
journey gives you an insight into the Buddhist
heritage and ruined ancient kingdoms of this
island. The architectural legacy that remains
today - entire townships with palaces, temples,
monasteries, hospitals, ponds, and gardens -
provides evidence of a sophisticated
civilization which possessed advanced knowledge
of science and technology, town planning and
design, and valued the arts. The vast
irrigational reservoirs built by the great kings
are still a vital supply of water.
Sacred City of Anuradhapura, Ancient City of
Polonnaruwa, Ancient City of Sigriya, Sacred
City of Kandy, Golden Temple of Dambulla and Old
Town of Galle and its Fortification which are
the main pillars of Sri Lanka's heritage which
is named by UNESCO as the World Heritage Sites
in Sri Lanka.
Sacred City of Anuradhapura
Anuradhapura is an
ancient city, located at a distance of 206 km
from Colombo. The city is in northern Sri Lanka
and is the capital of North-Central province.
Anuradhapura was established in 4th century BC.
It was the first capital of Sri Lanka and
remained so until 8th century AD. Anuradhapura
is an archaeologist's delight and contains
several monuments of historical importance. The
city is considered very sacred by the Buddhists
and is home to the largest dagobas in Sri Lanka.
A dagoba is a dome enshrining sacred relics or
the bodily remains of the Buddha, or articles
used by Him like the alms bowl and other objects
of veneration. It is built in different sizes on
a pedestal with a spire on top crowned with a
pinnacle. The earliest dagobas had a stone
umbrella on top of the dome in place of the
spire.
Ancient City of Polonnaruwa
Polonnurawa-located at a distance of 216 km from
Colombo-was the capital of Sri Lanka in medieval
times. Used by the Sri Lankan kings as a
'country residence' from the 7th century,
Polonnurawa became Sri Lanka's capital in the
11th century AD. During its time the city was
fortified with three concentric walls,
beautified with parks and gardens and sanctified
by many a shrine and sacred place. The city and
the surrounding area were watered by a unique
irrigational complex known as the Sea of
Parakrama (Parakrama Samudra).
Sacred City of Kandy
Kandy-a major
tourist destination-is also known as the
cultural capital of Sri Lanka. Nestled in the
hills at an altitude of 488 m, it is located at
a distance of 115 km from Colombo. Kandy has a
rich history. It was originally known as
Senkadagala pura after a hermit named Senkada
who lived there. Many of Sinhalese people call
it Mahanuwara meaning the Great City. The name
Kandy was derived by the colonial rulers from
the word Kanda in Sinhala, meaning a hill. Kandy
was the stronghold of the Sinhalese kings, who
promoted and protected the local culture until
the city fell to the British in 1815.
Today a bustling commercial city, Kandy is
famous for the Kandy Perahara-a huge cultural
pageant that takes place in the month of July or
August. It is one of the most colorful
processions of the world. Thousands of drummers
and dancers accompanying a parade of ornamented
elephants perform in the streets of Kandy. The
leading tusker carries the sacred tooth relic of
Lord Buddha, while the spectators pay homage to
it. The procession moves along the streets for
seven consecutive nights and concludes on the
day of the August full moon.
Galle and its Fortification
Galle-located 116
km to the south of Colombo on the southwest
corner of the island-was founded in the 16th
century by the Portuguese. It is the best
example of a fortified city built by Europeans
in South and South-East Asia, showing the
interaction between European architectural
styles and South Asian traditions. According to
James Emerson Tennent, Galle was the ancient
seaport of Tarshish, from which King Solomon
drew ivory, peacocks and other valuables.
Certainly, cinnamon was exported from Sri Lanka
as early as 1400 BC and the root of the word
itself is Hebrew, so Galle may have been the
main entry spot for the spice. View of the city
from the sea side Galle had been a prominent
seaport long before western rule in the country.
Persians, Arabs, Greeks, Romans, Malays and
Indians were doing business through Galle port.
The "modern" history of Galle starts in 1505,
when the first Portuguese ship, under Lourenço
de Almeida was driven there by a storm. However,
the people of the city refused to let the
Portuguese enter it, so the Portuguese took it
by force. In 1640, the Portuguese had to
surrender to the Dutch East India Company. The
Dutch built the present Fort in the year 1663.
They built a fortified wall, using solid
granite, and built three bastions, known as
"sun", "moon" and "star". Galle backstreet after
the British took over the country from the Dutch
in the year 1796, they preserved the Fort
unchanged, and used it as the administrative
centre of Galle.

AYURVEDA TOURS |
|

 |
Sri Lanka is
a country of rich heritage, one of which is its
indigenous system of Medicine, which has been practiced
by the people since time immemorial. The Ayurveda system
of medicine from North India, the Siddha system of
medicine from South India and the Unani system of
medicine of Arabs enriched with contributions from the
traditional system of medicine called Desheeya Chikitsa
is popularly known as the Indigenous system of medicine
in Sri Lanka. In Sri Lanka the number of traditional
Ayurveda practitioners is greater than trained modern
medicine professionals.
Now a days
ayurveda is fast becoming a household name with all
those interested in "alternative medicine". Yet Ayurveda
is not an alternative medicine. It is one of the oldest
forms of medical science known to man - originating 5000
years ago. It is more than a system of herbal medicine.
It is a way to a healthy & long life and can complement
modern medicine. Ayurveda has two main aims: It treats
the symptoms of a disease and it helps individuals to
strengthen their immune system. Ayurveda treats the
body, mind and spirit of a person as a whole entity, and
works on the basis that the mind and body affect each
other, and together can overcome disease.
There are
many Ayurveda Resorts and Hotels in Sri Lanka. You can
now look after your body and mind as well as enjoy a
nice tropical vacation in any of those Ayrveda Resorts
in Sri Lanka. If you want to heal your body, mind and
soul we can arrange an ayurvedic tour for you in Sri
Lanka. Please
